An Epic Start to Winter

An Epic Start to Winter 150 150 Mark

The guy (or gal) who writes the “Forecast Discussion” for the National Weather Service in Duluth – a normally highly-technical description of current and upcoming weather phenomenon, along with an explanation for the rationale of the current forecast – yesterday used the term “epic” to describe the snowfall over the past three days. I don’t know how much we got here at Voyageur, but it had to be in the neighborhood of two feet. And I think we are pretty much on the low end of snowfall totals for the region.

The result has been three consecutive days of closed schools. It’s relatively quiet around here lately. But lots of digging out yet to do.

We’ve started December right where we left off in April. All this snow, and a good 5 months of it yet to come. Winter has come.

We had a successful start to the Edison school year last Tuesday, and this week all the others start firing up. Yesterday Superior and Maple started their year, and tomorrow most of Duluth’s ISD #709 schools begin as does North Shore Charter school.

It’s a busy season here at Voyageur Bus Company!

What’s a modern web site without images? We already had a few here, but we are working on adding image galleries that will give visitors a sense of what we do and how we work.

There is a link up above to a Galleries page and some sub-links to individual galleries of images. We will add more as time allows.

Privacy Policy In The Works

Privacy Policy In The Works 150 150 Mark

It was brought to my attention recently that our web site lacked a privacy policy, or terms of service, of any kind. As the web guy, I recognize that to be a significant problem, particularly since we are using the site to provide contact forms which give us a sender’s e-mail address, and a pre-employment application form, which collects a variety of personal information from applicants.

If  you do one of these things – apply for a job or just send us an e-mail – or participate in any other form of interaction on this web site as time goes on, you need to be assured that we are treating your personal information with respect and a serious concern for your privacy.

To that end I will be working on drafting a formal policy to be included in links on this site, based on various templates I have discovered. I don’t know how long that will take, and I have discovered that some other site matters need to be addressed first.

For now, let me just state informally that we DO treat your information with respect. It will never leave our hands for any reason, never be sold, and we will not use your contact information for any purpose other than that for which you intended it. We don’t build a contact database with your information, and will never contact you except in regard to your specific request – whether that be for information about a service we provide or to apply for work here at Voyageur.

While our site does place cookies on your computer and we do track some information (specifically via Google Analytics) it is strictly for analysis of our site and to improve our service.

Hoping that works for now, until something more formal is put in place.

Another Marathon in the Books

Another Marathon in the Books 150 150 Mark

Grandma's Marathon buses lined up.This past weekend saw the running of the 37th annual Grandma’s Marathon, along with the Garry Bjorklund Half-Marathon. The weather forecast going into the weekend had us all a little on edge, but we dodged one when the predicted showered and thunderstorms held off through the start up of both races and almost all of the race itself.

This year we ran 140 buses to the start of the half-marathon to drop off racers (not counting the elite buses for the U.S. Women’s Half-Marathon Championship), and 123 plus a train to the start of the full marathon.) In 2 1/2 hours we bused roughly 12,000 people from points around the Twin Ports and Two Harbors to the start of their race. In addition, we spent the day making sure that those runner who, for whatever reason, just couldn’t complete the course were transported safely back to the DECC area, and also helped those runners who finished get back to their hotels and/or cars at the various parking sites.

Putting this event on is a major work, and our Operations Manager, Rudy Lundahl deserves nearly all the credit for taking on the task year after year, though meeting after meeting, rough draft after rough draft, encouraging and cajoling drivers to participate, and all in all dedicating his working life for over a month to making sure it gets done without a hitch.

Until the 38th Annual – June 21, 2014…

There are pictures from the morning here.

Continuing Site Rebuild

Continuing Site Rebuild 150 150 Mark

We are continuing to work on rebuilding our web site following an invasion that resulted in some nasty, corrupted code. It’s a long process because of the fact that our IT and web guy (me) has other stuff he has to do, too! But, I’m learning WordPress and making some progress, so please continue to be patient as we get new content and functionality built in.
